OceanGate's Titan imploded on 18 June 2023 about 3,300 metres down, killing all five aboard. The US Navy detected the acoustic signature within hours, but a search continued for four days and dominated global coverage. The hull was carbon fibre rather than the titanium or steel used in certified deep submersibles, and the company had declined classification, arguing that outside review stifled innovation.
