Charles III was crowned at Westminster Abbey on 6 May 2023 in a ceremony deliberately shorter and smaller than his mother's, with leaders of non-Christian faiths given a role for the first time. Anti-monarchy protesters were arrested under a public order law that had come into force days earlier, which drew criticism from parliamentary committees and the Council of Europe.
