On 23 June 2023 Yevgeny Prigozhin's Wagner Group seized Rostov-on-Don and advanced up the M4 toward Moscow, shooting down Russian aircraft on the way. Putin called it treason; a day later Belarus brokered a deal and the column withdrew. It was the gravest challenge to Putin's authority in his 23 years in power. Prigozhin died two months later when his aircraft fell out of the sky north of Moscow.
