Barbie and Oppenheimer were released on 21 July 2023 and took over 2.4 billion dollars between them, drawing audiences back to cinemas after the pandemic and the streaming shift. Oppenheimer won seven Academy Awards including best picture. The joint phenomenon was entirely audience-generated; neither studio planned it, and both had tried to move the date.
