Mohamed Bazoum was detained by his guard on 26 July 2023, completing a run of coups across Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Chad and Niger. France withdrew its troops and the United States gave up a 110-million-dollar drone base at Agadez; Russian forces arrived. Jihadist violence in the Sahel has risen since, and the region now accounts for over half of all deaths from terrorism worldwide.
