Protests began on 8 September 2025 after Nepal blocked 26 social media services, and turned into a revolt against corruption in which the parliament building was set alight and at least 70 people were killed. Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned within two days. Sushila Karki, a former chief justice, was installed to lead an interim government to elections — the first woman to lead Nepal.
