The Vera Rubin Observatory opens its eye

First images were released on 23 June 2025 from the largest digital camera ever built for astronomy. Rubin will image the whole visible sky every few nights for a decade, expecting to find millions of supernovae and several million new solar system objects — it discovered over two thousand asteroids in its first ten hours. It is named for the astronomer whose galaxy rotation measurements made dark matter undeniable.
