After 26 tourists were killed at Pahalgam in Kashmir in April, India struck targets in Pakistan on 7 May 2025 under the name Operation Sindoor. Four days of missile, drone and air combat followed — the heaviest fighting between the two since 1971 — before a ceasefire on 10 May. India also suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, which had survived every previous war between them.
