Francis died on 21 April 2025, aged 88, the day after appearing at Easter Mass. He had been the first Jesuit pope, the first from the Americas and the first to take that name. He appointed about 80% of the cardinal electors, many from countries that had never had one, and asked to be buried in Santa Maria Maggiore rather than St Peter's — the first pope outside the Vatican in over a century.
