M23 entered Goma on 27 January 2025 and took Bukavu three weeks later, the furthest the movement had ever advanced. Thousands were killed and hundreds of thousands displaced in a conflict rooted in the aftermath of the 1994 Rwandan genocide and in the coltan and cobalt on which the world's electronics depend. A US-brokered framework was signed in Washington in June 2025 and did not hold.
