Carter died on 29 December 2024, having spent nearly two years in hospice care. A one-term president widely judged a failure at the time, he built a post-presidency of election monitoring, house building and the near-eradication of Guinea worm disease — from 3.5 million cases in 1986 to a handful a year. He is the only president to reach 100.
