A rebel offensive that began in Aleppo on 27 November 2024 reached Damascus on 8 December, and Bashar al-Assad fled to Moscow. The army — hollowed out by corruption and abandoned by a Russia occupied in Ukraine and a Hezbollah broken by Israel — barely fought. Prisoners walked out of Sednaya, and the mass graves of a war that killed some 600,000 people began to be opened.
