Passed on 28 November 2024 and in force from December 2025, the law requires platforms to take reasonable steps to keep under-16s off their services, with fines up to 50 million Australian dollars. Enforcement rests on age assurance technology that does not reliably exist. Several European governments and American states have since drafted versions of it.
