The earthquake of 28 March 2025 ruptured some 500 kilometres of fault, killing more than 5,000 people in Myanmar and collapsing a tower block under construction in Bangkok a thousand kilometres away. Relief was obstructed by a civil war in which the junta continued airstrikes during the emergency, and by the near-total collapse of Myanmar's health system since the 2021 coup.
