The election of 23 February 2025 put Alternative for Germany second with about 21%, its best result, doubling its 2021 share and winning most of the east. Every other party maintained the cordon sanitaire against governing with it. Friedrich Merz became chancellor after the CDU/CSU won, and promptly suspended the debt brake to fund defence and infrastructure.
