The earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan just before midnight on 31 August 2025. Shallow depth, mud-brick construction and roads cut by landslides made it lethal out of all proportion to its magnitude. Relief was hampered by the collapse of international aid to Afghanistan since 2021 and by restrictions on women aid workers, which limited access to women survivors.
