Protests over daily blackouts and water shortages began on 25 September 2025 and spread nationwide. An elite army unit sided with the demonstrators, and President Andry Rajoelina fled the country and was impeached in October, with Colonel Michael Randrianirina taking power. It was the third African government to fall to protest-plus-mutiny in two years.
