Melissa came ashore in western Jamaica on 28 October 2025 as a category five with sustained winds near 300 km/h, the most intense landfall in the island's recorded history, then crossed eastern Cuba. It intensified with extraordinary speed over water several degrees warmer than average, the pattern that has come to define the strongest storms of the last decade.
