Fire spread through a housing estate under renovation in Tai Po, Hong Kong on 26 November 2025, killing about 160 people — the city's deadliest fire since 1948. The bamboo scaffolding and the netting wrapped around it let flames climb and jump between blocks, and alarms in several towers did not sound. Arrests followed for manslaughter and corruption, and Hong Kong began phasing out bamboo scaffolding.
