Thieves used a furniture lift to reach a first-floor window of the Galerie d'Apollon on 19 October 2025 and left with eight pieces of the French crown jewels valued at about 88 million euros. The museum closed for the day and the theft exposed years of documented failures in its security. Arrests followed within weeks; most of the jewellery has not been recovered.
