The African National Congress fell to about 40% in the election of 29 May 2024, losing the majority it had held since Mandela's victory in 1994. It formed a government of national unity with the Democratic Alliance, its historic opponent. The result was accepted without violence, which in a country with South Africa's history was the more remarkable half of it.
