On 8 April 2024 the Moon's shadow tracked from Mazatlan to Newfoundland with up to four and a half minutes of totality — twice the 2017 eclipse — and passed directly over more populous ground than any eclipse in decades. The next total eclipse crossing a comparable swathe of the contiguous United States is in 2045.
