Declared on 15 April 2024 and running into 2025, the event affected reefs in more than eighty countries — over 84% of the world's reef area, the largest proportion ever recorded. It followed the hottest sea surface temperatures in the instrumental record. The Great Barrier Reef suffered its fifth mass bleaching in eight years, having had none before 1998.
