Passed by the European Parliament on 13 March 2024, the act regulates by risk: banning social scoring and most real-time biometric identification, imposing obligations on high-risk uses in employment, credit and policing, and setting transparency requirements for general-purpose models. Its provisions phase in to 2027, and as with the GDPR its practical effect reaches far beyond Europe.
