Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger leave ECOWAS
Three juntas walk out of West Africa's regional bloc and form their own.

The three announced withdrawal on 28 January 2024 and formed the Alliance of Sahel States, completing their break with ECOWAS and with France. It was the first time members had left the bloc in its fifty-year history, and it removed the main regional lever against coups at the moment it was most needed.
