Lai won on 13 January 2024 with 40% in a three-way race, giving the Democratic Progressive Party an unprecedented third presidential term, though it lost its legislative majority. Beijing calls him a separatist and has refused contact since 2016, and military activity around the island stepped up further after his inauguration.
