The earthquake of 1 January 2024 killed more than 500 people, destroyed thousands of buildings and raised parts of the Noto coast by up to four metres, leaving fishing harbours dry. A tsunami followed within minutes. The next day a coastguard aircraft carrying relief supplies collided with an airliner at Haneda; all 379 people aboard the airliner escaped in 18 minutes, an evacuation later studied as a model.
