Narendra Modi consecrated the temple at Ayodhya on 22 January 2024, on ground where the Babri Masjid stood until it was destroyed, triggering riots that killed about 2,000 people. The Supreme Court awarded the site for the temple in 2019. The prime minister performing the rites, in an election year, marked how far the separation of religion and state had shifted in India.
