Released 2 February 2024, the Vision Pro was the most technically accomplished head-mounted display yet built and the clearest test of whether spatial computing had a consumer market. It did not: sales were in the hundreds of thousands, production was cut within months, and Apple redirected effort toward lightweight glasses. Together with Meta's retreat it closed the metaverse chapter opened in 2021.
