South Africa filed on 29 December 2023 and the International Court of Justice ordered provisional measures on 26 January 2024, requiring Israel to prevent genocidal acts and allow humanitarian aid. The court did not rule on whether genocide had occurred, a determination that takes years. The case drew interventions from more than a dozen states and became a defining fault line in international law.
