Turnout reached 74% on 15 October 2023, the highest since 1989 and higher than the election that ended communist rule. Tusk formed a government on 13 December, ending eight years of Law and Justice rule that had brought Poland into repeated conflict with the EU over judicial independence. Unwinding those changes proved far slower than winning the election.
