Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon fell about 50% in 2023 and further in 2024, to the lowest rate in nine years, after enforcement agencies gutted under the previous administration were rebuilt. It is among the largest measured reversals of an environmental trend anywhere, and it demonstrated that the driver had been policy rather than anything structural.
