R21/Matrix-M was recommended on 2 October 2023 at around four dollars a dose and with supply of over 100 million a year, following RTS,S which had been recommended in 2021 but never manufactured at sufficient scale. Malaria kills roughly 600,000 people a year, most of them African children under five. Routine immunisation began across west and central Africa through 2024.
