Azerbaijan took the enclave on 19 September 2023 after a nine-month blockade of the Lachin corridor. Within a week more than 100,000 ethnic Armenians — essentially the whole population — had left for Armenia, and the Republic of Artsakh dissolved itself. It closed a conflict that had run since 1988 and emptied a region Armenians had inhabited for two millennia.
