Results announced in June 2024 showed lenacapavir prevented every infection among more than 2,000 young women in South Africa and Uganda. Approved for prevention in the United States in June 2025, it requires two injections a year rather than a daily pill. Generic licensing deals aim at two dollars a month for low-income countries, against a list price above 28,000 dollars a year.
