France's snap election
A president dissolves parliament after a European defeat and loses his majority entirely.

Macron called the election on 9 June 2024 hours after the National Rally topped the European poll. Tactical withdrawals between the left and the centre kept the far right from power in the second round on 7 July, but produced a parliament split three ways with no majority. France had four prime ministers in the following eighteen months and could not pass a budget on time.
