Biden ended his candidacy on 21 July 2024 after a debate performance four weeks earlier had alarmed his own party, and endorsed Kamala Harris the same day. No incumbent had withdrawn this late in the modern era. Harris consolidated the nomination within 48 hours and lost the election in November.
