Indonesia marked independence day at Nusantara on 17 August 2024, the first ceremony held in the new capital. Jakarta is subsiding up to 25 centimetres a year from groundwater extraction and about 40% of it now sits below sea level. Funding fell short of projections and the transfer has slipped repeatedly, but it is the largest capital relocation attempted this century.
