The Games of 26 July to 11 August 2024 opened with athletes carried on boats through the middle of Paris in heavy rain, the first summer opening ceremony held outside a stadium. Events ran at Versailles, the Place de la Concorde and the foot of the Eiffel Tower. Paris achieved full gender parity in athlete quotas for the first time in Olympic history, and a cleaned-up Seine hosted open-water swimming after a century's ban.
