Protests against civil service quotas began in July 2024, were met with lethal force, and grew into a national uprising in which around a thousand people were killed. On 5 August Sheikh Hasina fled Bangladesh by helicopter after fifteen years in power. Muhammad Yunus, the Nobel laureate economist she had prosecuted, was installed to lead an interim government.
