Israel struck Hezbollah's underground headquarters in Dahieh on 27 September 2024, killing Nasrallah along with much of the group's command. He had led Hezbollah since 1992 and was among the most powerful figures in the region. The decapitation of the organisation over the following weeks removed the main deterrent Iran had built against attack on itself, with consequences that ran through 2025 and 2026.
