The 20th Party Congress closed on 22 October 2022 with Xi confirmed for a third term as general secretary, breaking the two-term convention that had governed succession since Deng. The Politburo Standing Committee was filled entirely with his allies, and Hu Jintao was escorted from the closing session on camera. China has no designated successor for the first time in forty years.
