The chip export controls
Washington cuts China off from advanced semiconductors, and the supply chain splits.

Rules issued on 7 October 2022 barred the export of advanced chips and the equipment to make them to China, and forbade American citizens from working in Chinese fabs without a licence. Successive rounds tightened them. The measures aimed to hold China several generations behind in AI compute; they also accelerated Chinese domestic effort, and by 2025 the results of that were visible.
