Meloni was sworn in on 22 October 2022 at the head of a coalition led by Brothers of Italy, a party descended from the postwar neo-fascist MSI. Predictions of a rupture with Brussels did not materialise: her government stayed firmly behind Ukraine and inside EU fiscal rules, while tightening migration policy sharply.
