Mahsa Jina Amini was arrested in Tehran for improper hijab and died in custody on 16 September 2022. The protests that followed spread to every province and were led by women and schoolgirls, with the slogan Woman, Life, Freedom. Security forces killed several hundred people and detained tens of thousands; the movement was suppressed without toppling the government, but enforcement of the dress code visibly weakened afterwards.
