Elizabeth II died at Balmoral on 8 September 2022, aged 96, after the longest reign in British history and the longest of any female monarch. She had appointed her fifteenth prime minister two days earlier. The funeral on 19 September was watched by an estimated four billion people, and the accession of Charles III renewed republican debate across the Commonwealth realms.
