Takaichi, who became prime minister in October 2025 as the first woman to lead Japan, won a supermajority in the House of Representatives on 8 February 2026. A protege of Shinzo Abe on the party's right, she took office with the yen weak, prices rising for the first time in a generation, and the security debate reopened by war in the Middle East.
