Mullally, previously Bishop of London and before that the Chief Nursing Officer for England, was confirmed on 28 January 2026 as the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury and the first woman to hold the office. The Church of England had ordained women as priests only since 1994 and as bishops since 2014. Several provinces of the Anglican Communion said they would not recognise her authority.
