Barbados becomes a republic

At midnight on 30 November 2021 Barbados replaced Queen Elizabeth II with a president, Sandra Mason, on the 55th anniversary of its independence. It was the first realm to do so since Mauritius in 1992, and the ceremony — attended by the Prince of Wales — was widely read as a template other Caribbean states might follow.
