Announced on 15 September 2021, AUKUS commits the three states to share nuclear-propulsion technology so Australia can field nuclear-powered attack submarines — only the second time the United States has shared the technology, after Britain in 1958. Australia tore up a 56-billion-euro conventional submarine contract with France to do it, and Paris recalled its ambassadors from Washington and Canberra for the first time in the history of the alliance.
